Grab a co-op partner before you even think about buying this one. Solo it strains; with a friend blasting beside you, it clicks into something genuinely fun.

I want to be upfront with you: I came to Dead Space 3 expecting a horror game and got a co-op action shooter wearing a horror costume. That shift is the lens through which you have to evaluate the whole thing, and it makes all the difference in whether you walk away satisfied or annoyed. The core loop sends Isaac Clarke and new partner Sgt. John Carver across derelict spaceships and then down to the frozen planet Tau Volantis. The zero-gravity wreckage sections are genuinely the game at its best: floaty, tense, visually spectacular, and packed with optional side missions that gate better weapon parts and supplies. Once the game plants you on the icy surface for the second half, the pacing drags and the enemy encounters start to blur together. Recycled Necromorph types come in waves so relentless that the strategic dismemberment the series built its reputation on gets steamrolled by sheer numbers. Solo players bear the worst of it: what feels chaotic-but-manageable with two sets of eyes becomes genuinely exhausting alone. The weapon crafting bench is the real star here. You can bolt a ripper blade attachment onto a plasma cutter pistol, run a fully automatic rifle with an acid-damage underbarrel shotgun, or build a melee-focused hydraulic hammer loadout and support your partner with stasis replenishment. The combinations are wide enough to stay interesting across the whole campaign, even if a stagger-heavy build ends up being the meta answer to the game constantly rushing enemies into your personal space. Blueprints can be shared between co-op partners, which encourages the kind of division-of-labour theorycrafting that makes online play sticky. Be warned: EA's microtransaction hooks are baked in, but scavenger bots grind resources passively so you can ignore the storefront almost entirely. The co-op design has a clever trick that not enough people talk about: Carver experiences hallucinations Isaac cannot see, and several co-op-exclusive missions split the two players into completely different subjective realities in the same physical space. The host sees an empty corridor; the client is fighting through a psychotic breakdown. It is the most original storytelling device in the game, and there are frustratingly few of these moments. The tether mechanic keeps both players in the same room at all times, so you cannot divide and conquer objectives, but that closeness fuels the boot-stomping, limb-flying chaos that makes the game fun at a Saturday-night energy level. Enemy scaling does not properly account for two players on normal difficulty, so bump it up at least one notch if you want a fight. Hardware note for PC players: EA's DRM requires an internet connection to launch, even for the single-player campaign. No offline play. That is a real nuisance in 2025 and worth factoring in. Controller support is solid and the default Xbox-style layout translates cleanly to a gamepad; keyboard and mouse work fine for the over-the-shoulder shooting, though this was never designed to be a precision-aiming game. No split-screen on PC: co-op is online only. If you finished Dead Space 1 and 2 and wanted more of that claustrophobic dread, 3 will disappoint you in ways that feel deliberate rather than accidental. The franchise DNA is still visible in the art direction and the enemy designs, but the moment-to-moment structure is closer to a third-person cover shooter than survival horror. Taken on its own terms as a co-op action game with an unusually deep crafting system, though, it holds up better than its reputation suggests. Riley, Scout Team
