Valve delays new Steam hardware lineup over component costs

RAM and storage prices are messing with Valve's plans. The Steam Machine, Frame, and Controller won't hit their Q1 target.

So here's the thing about Valve and deadlines - they've never really been best friends. And now we've got another classic case of Valve Time in action.

Remember those shiny new hardware announcements from November? The Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and that redesigned Steam Controller? Yeah, well, turns out we're gonna be waiting a bit longer. Valve just dropped a blog post basically saying "oops, our bad" about the whole Q1 2026 launch window. They're now targeting sometime in the first half of the year, which in Valve speak could mean anything from April to June. Or July. Who knows at this point.

The culprit this time? Those ridiculous RAM and storage prices that have been making PC builders cry since late last year. Valve specifically called out the component shortages, and honestly, I can't blame them for pumping the brakes. Nobody wants to launch hardware that's either overpriced or impossible to find. We saw what happened with graphics cards and consoles during the pandemic shortages - total nightmare.

What bugs me though is that Valve had to know this was coming. Component prices started climbing months ago, and every tech company has been dealing with the same supply chain headaches. But hey, at least they're being upfront about it instead of going radio silent like they sometimes do.

For those keeping score at home, this pushes the Steam Machine revival back at least three months from its original target. The silver lining? More time for Valve to polish things up and maybe iron out whatever quirks these devices were bound to ship with. Because let's be real - first-gen Valve hardware always has some weird issues that need sorting out.
