If you were a PC gamer in the early 2000s, there's a decent chance The Guild burrowed into your brain and never left. It was this wonderfully weird medieval life sim where you could be a merchant, a craftsman, a scheming politician, or basically just a chaos agent in a living town that had no idea what to do with you. Nobody ever really made anything like it again, and fans have been quietly waiting for a proper follow-up for 20 years.

So here comes THQ Nordic with The Guild: Europa 1410, and the early word is... not great. By most accounts this feels less like the spiritual successor people spent two decades hoping for and more like a cautious, underwhelming step sideways. The things that made the original feel alive and unpredictable don't seem to have made the trip. For a genre that already gets minimal love from big publishers, a misfire here stings extra hard, because who knows when anyone else will even try. Life sim fans deserve better than a sequel that plays it safe with a formula that was always at its best when it was gloriously, messily ambitious.
