Steel Century Groove Might Be the Weirdest RPG I've Played This Year

Sloth Gloss Games just dropped their first game and honestly? It's a rhythm RPG that actually works. Yeah, I'm surprised too.

So here's the thing about Steel Century Groove - it shouldn't work. A rhythm game mixed with RPG mechanics sounds like someone threw two random genres in a blender and hoped for the best. But somehow Sloth Gloss Games pulled it off with their debut project, and I'm kind of obsessed.

You know how most rhythm games have you tapping buttons to anime songs or EDM tracks? This one has you battling mechs to jazz fusion. I'm not even kidding. The whole game takes place in this weird retro-futuristic world where combat is literally choreographed to music. Miss a beat? Your attack whiffs. Nail that perfect combo? Your damage multiplies like crazy.

What really got me was how they handle character progression. Instead of grinding for XP, you're basically learning new dance moves that unlock different abilities. Your tank character might need to master a slow waltz pattern to unlock their shield bash, while your DPS has to nail these insane bebop sequences. It's bizarre but it totally works.

The story's pretty standard - evil corporation, plucky resistance, giant robots - but the presentation sells it. Everything from the UI to the character animations syncs with whatever track is playing. Even the dialogue scenes have this subtle rhythm to them. It's one of those games where you realize you've been nodding your head for the past hour without noticing.

Look, if you told me last week I'd be recommending a jazz-powered mech RPG, I would've laughed. But Steel Century Groove manages to be both completely ridiculous and genuinely engaging. Sloth Gloss Games came out swinging with this one. Just don't blame me when you can't get the boss themes out of your head.
