Killer Inn, their new murder mystery social game, is getting a quick playtest this weekend before it drops next week. And honestly? I'm not sure what to make of it.
We're almost at the two-year mark since Square realized that locking games to specific platforms was hurting their bottom line. February 2024 was when they had that big revelation, and since then we've seen stuff like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy finally hitting PC and Xbox. Progress, right? But then they announce this bizarre social deduction game that feels like it came from a completely different timeline.
The playtest runs for just 48 hours starting tomorrow, and it's free for everyone. You basically play as guests at this creepy inn trying to figure out who the killer is before they get you. Think Among Us meets Clue, but with that Square Enix polish. Or at least that's what they're promising.
Look, I get it. Not every game needs to be a massive RPG or action title. But after years of questionable decisions, you'd think Square would focus on what fans actually want instead of throwing darts at a board. Then again, who knows? Maybe this'll be the sleeper hit of 2026. Stranger things have happened in gaming.
If you're curious, the playtest starts February 8th at noon EST. The full game launches February 14th - yeah, Valentine's Day. Nothing says romance like accusing your friends of murder, I guess.
