Someone Finally Said It: Tactical Rocks Need to Go

The Warhammer hobby community is pushing back against the obligatory scenic base rock that somehow ended up under every single miniature ever painted.

Look, I get it. You want your Space Marine to look dramatic. You want him standing on something. But somewhere between 2010 and now, the entire Warhammer community collectively decided that every miniature needs to be perched on a jagged chunk of rubble like it's posing for a fantasy album cover. Bases already exist. The model already has a place to stand. The rock is not doing what you think it's doing.

The pushback feels overdue honestly. There's a whole school of painters and hobbyists making the case that clean, textured bases with good groundwork hit harder visually than a model wobbling on top of a grey foam rock that's taller than its own head. It draws the eye weird, it messes with scale, and half the time the rock itself is just undercoated and forgotten about anyway. Good basing is a craft. Slapping a cork piece under your guy and calling it "elevated terrain" is not the craft. The miniatures themselves have enough going on without needing a geological feature to justify their existence.
