Path of Exile 2 director Jonathan Rogers apparently had a rough holiday season, and he's putting the blame squarely on the players who exploited an in-game system to stack up obscene amounts of currency. In a recent interview, Rogers said the exploit "ruined Christmas" for him, and joked that he's completely run out of sympathy for everyone who took advantage of it. That's a pretty candid thing to say out loud, but honestly it tracks for a game where the economy is such a core part of the experience. When a handful of players are printing virtual money, it throws off the balance for everyone else.
The story gets a bit awkward though: partway through the interview, Rogers apparently found out that players were actively doing it again, right then and there. That kind of real-time gut punch has to sting for any developer who's already dealing with the fallout from the first wave. Grinding Gear Games has been navigating a tricky road with PoE2 since its early access launch, trying to tune a complex economy while a very motivated playerbase probes every crack in the system. Exploits in ARPGs are almost a tradition at this point, but that doesn't make them any less of a headache for the people trying to keep the game fair. Expect a patch, and expect Rogers to have something to say about it.
