So here's the thing about game development - sometimes projects disappear for over a decade and everyone assumes they're dead. Mewgenics just proved that wrong in the most spectacular way possible.

The cat breeding sim from Edmund McMillen (yeah, the Super Meat Boy guy) shot straight to number one on Steam's best sellers list yesterday, and apparently the team recovered their entire development budget in just three hours. Three. Hours. After being announced way back in 2012, going dark, getting cancelled, then somehow rising from the dead like some kind of gaming zombie.

I remember when this game first got announced. Obama was president. The Avengers had just come out. We thought the world would end because of the Mayan calendar. Wild times. But honestly, the wait might've been worth it. The game's this completely bonkers mix of cat genetics, tactical battles, and furniture hoarding that sounds like it was designed during a fever dream. You breed cats with increasingly weird mutations, send them on adventures, and apparently there's over 13 trillion possible cat combinations. My brain can't even process that number.

What really gets me is how this whole situation turned around. Back in 2018, McMillen straight up said the game was cancelled. Done. Finished. Then in 2022 he was like "actually, we're making it again" and everyone was skeptical. Can you blame us? But here we are in 2026 and not only did they deliver, they're crushing it on the sales charts.

The reviews are looking pretty solid too. Players seem to love how absolutely chaotic everything is. One person said their cat developed psychic powers and started a cult. Another mentioned their cat became a lawyer. I don't know what's happening in this game but I need it immediately.
