When Magic's first Marvel-branded cards dropped, Spider-Man became a bit of a poster child for what goes wrong when you try to cram a beloved, mechanically complex character into a trading card format without fully thinking it through. The cards felt off, either too scattered in their abilities or just missing the kinetic, wall-crawling energy that makes Spidey worth caring about. It was a frustrating stumble for what should have been an easy slam dunk.
The Marvel Super Heroes set looks like a genuine course correction. The Avengers are leading the charge, which makes sense since characters like Captain America and Iron Man translate naturally into clean, readable card designs. The X-Men and Fantastic Four are along for the ride too, though clearly more as supporting cast than headliners. More importantly, the Spider-Man cards in this set seem to have been rebuilt with actual intention behind the mechanics, addressing the clunkiness that made the earlier versions feel like rushed licensed filler. It is still early and full card breakdowns are trickling out, but the direction here looks considerably more confident than where things started. For players who bounced off the first Marvel wave, this set might be worth a second look.
