Short answer
Beat Malenia by exploiting Bleed and Frostbite while playing patient, reactive defense: never trade hits (she heals on every hit, even blocked), learn to dodge or run through her Waterfowl Dance, and in Phase 2 stay clear of her Scarlet Aeonia flower bloom. A Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche summon to pull her aggro makes the fight far more manageable.

How to beat Malenia, Blade of Miquella

Malenia is widely considered the hardest fight in the base game. The core problem is that she recovers health every time she lands a hit, even when you block, so a turtle-and-block strategy slowly loses. Win by punishing safely and stacking status effects.

  1. Stack Bleed or Frostbite. She has low resistance to both, so weapons or skills that proc these strip large chunks of her health. Bleed builds (Rivers of Blood, Bloodhound's Fang) and Cold-affinity weapons are popular for this reason.
  2. Stop blocking as your main defense. Because she heals on every connecting hit including blocked ones, prioritize dodging and spacing over shielding. Blocking only feeds her health back.
  3. Summon a Spirit Ash to split her aggro. Mimic Tear (a copy of your own character and gear) or Black Knife Tiche can hold her attention, giving you safe windows to land Bleed and Frostbite procs.
  4. Punish in short bursts. Hit once or twice after a combo ends, then reset to neutral. Greedy strings get you killed and heal her.
  5. Abuse her low Phase 1 poise. She is vulnerable to knockdown in the first phase, so heavy or staggering attacks can interrupt her and open big punish windows.
  6. Survive Waterfowl Dance. This is her signature flurry. The wind-up can be interrupted before it starts, and the move can be parried. If you cannot interrupt it, create distance and dodge each flurry; running out of range during the gaps between flurries reduces how many hits can land.
  7. Open Phase 2 carefully. When she transitions, she leaps into the air and immediately divebombs. Wait until she accelerates toward you, then dodge in any direction; dodging too early gets you hit.
  8. Never touch the Scarlet Aeonia flower. In Phase 2 she blooms a giant rot flower that inflicts Scarlet Rot. To beat the charge version, run toward her and get behind her since she cannot steer well while charging. Stay far from the bloom and its lingering rot pool.
  9. Bring rot cures and high Vigor. Phase 2 layers Scarlet Rot on top of her physical damage. Carry Preserving Boluses to cure buildup and keep Vigor high to survive single mistakes.

Phase-by-phase plan

PhaseWhat changesKey threatsYour priority
Phase 1: Blade of MiquellaFast katana melee, lifesteal on every hit (even blocked)Waterfowl Dance flurry, quick gap-closersDodge not block, proc Bleed/Frost, exploit low poise for knockdowns
TransitionTriggers when Phase 1 health hits zero, cutscene playsImmediate aerial divebomb on landingWait for her to accelerate, then dodge through it
Phase 2: Goddess of RotAdds Scarlet Rot, new AoE, Scarlet Aeonia flower bloomScarlet Aeonia rot explosion, rot buildupAvoid the flower, cure rot, keep punishing in short windows

Build around fast status application and survivability. A Bleed setup using Rivers of Blood (its Corpse Piler skill procs bleed in a few hits) or Bloodhound's Fang works well, as does a Cold-affinity katana to layer Frostbite. Pump Vigor for survivability and upgrade your weapon near max before attempting her. Pair this with a Mimic Tear summon for aggro control, or Black Knife Tiche if you want a more evasive, damage-focused ally. Since her damage is purely physical, physical damage-reduction options (such as the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman or the Opaline Hardtear in your Physick) further increase your survival margin.

How to reach Malenia

  1. Collect both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion (left and right).
  2. Use the medallion at the Grand Lift of Rold to access the Consecrated Snowfield.
  3. Travel to Ordina, Liturgical Town in the north of the Snowfield and solve its puzzle by lighting all four torches.
  4. Use the teleporter to reach Miquella's Haligtree, then fight down through the tree.
  5. Descend to the bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, where Malenia waits behind the fog wall.

FAQ

What is the best weapon to use against Malenia? Anything that applies Bleed or Frostbite quickly. Rivers of Blood and Bloodhound's Fang are strong Bleed choices, and a Cold-affinity uchigatana layers Frostbite. She is also vulnerable to Fire, while Holy damage is absorbed and should be avoided.

Why does Malenia keep healing? She recovers health on every hit she lands, and this happens even when you block the attack. That is why dodging and spacing beat turtling, and why a Spirit Ash to pull her aggro is so valuable.

How do I dodge Waterfowl Dance? You have three options: interrupt the wind-up before the flurry starts, parry it, or create distance and dodge each of the flurries. If you get caught up close, rolling away during the brief gaps between flurries limits how many hits connect.

What level should I be to fight Malenia? Aim for at least level 120, with around 150 being comfortable, and bring a weapon upgraded close to max. Skill and learning her patterns matter more than raw level, but high Vigor gives you room to survive mistakes.

What do I get for beating Malenia? She drops 480,000 runes, Malenia's Great Rune, and the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess. The Remembrance can be exchanged at Roundtable Hold for the Hand of Malenia katana or the Scarlet Aeonia incantation.
