BioWare's Co-Founder Spent a Decade Chasing BG3 Before Larian Got There — GamerScout

Long before Larian Studios was deep in tadpole lore and camp romances, BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka was actively trying to get a third Baldur's Gate made. We're talking over a decade of pushing, pitching, and pursuing the rights to bring the classic CRPG series back to life. It never came together on BioWare's end for a mix of reasons, and eventually Larian swooped in, spent seven years building something enormous, and shipped one of the most acclaimed RPGs ever made.

What makes this story interesting is Muzyka's attitude about it. He's not bitter. He told PC Gamer he doesn't really do jealousy, and honestly that reads as genuine rather than diplomatic. Larian did something special with BG3, and even the guy who wanted that job for years seems to recognize it. It's a good reminder that the game we actually got was never inevitable. It took a very specific studio, a very specific moment, and a mountain of Early Access feedback to become what it became. Muzyka's version might have been great. It also might have been completely different. We'll never know, and that's fine.
